Employment Opportunities
All applications and resumes are kept on file for future reference. Prior to employment, an extensive background investigation will be conducted. A physical examination by a licensed physician may be required for certain positions. Appointments of all applicants will be made solely at the discretion of the Sheriff. Individuals meeting the minimum qualifications for law enforcement or jailer positions are invited to complete and submit the required applications. Employment forms may be picked up at the Sheriff’s Office front desk, weekdays from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.. Decatur County Deputy Sheriff Requirements
Minimum requirements for Deputies:

  • United States citizen
  • At least 20 years of age
  • High school graduate or equivalency
  • Possess a valid Georgia driver’s license
  • Not have been convicted by any state or by the Federal Government of any crime, for which the punishment could have been imprisonment in the Federal or State prison or institution; nor have been convicted of sufficient misdemeanors to establish a pattern of disregard for the law, provided that, for purposes of this paragraph, violations of traffic laws and other offenses involving the operation of motor vehicles, when the applicant has received a pardon, shall not be considered.
  • No domestic violence convictions
  • Good moral character and reputation
  • Community oriented personality
  • Be found, after examination by licensed physician to be free from any physical, conditional, or mental conditions, which might adversely affect his exercising the powers and duties of a Peace Officer.
  • Have an oral interview to determine the applicant’s appearance, background, and ability to communicate
  • Applicants with college degrees, military veterans or those already POST Certified will be given preference over similarly situated candidates.

Applications should be accompanied by COPIES (no originals) of the following documents:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate
  • Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Copies of any other documents you so desire

Applications are reviewed; criminal history and driving records are checked.
A Background Investigation will be conducted including a complete check of employment references and personal references.
If you are considered as a candidate for employment you will be contacted for an interview.
Applicants will be chosen to fill positions as they become available.
Applicants chosen from interviews will then be required to take a polygraph test.

Decatur County Detention Officer Requirements
Minimum requirements for Detention Officers:

  • United States citizen
  • At least 20 years of age
  • High school graduate or equivalency
  • No felony or misdemeanor perjury convictions
  • No domestic violence convictions
  • Good moral character
  • Community oriented personality
  • Be found, after examination by licensed physician to be free from any physical, conditional, or mental conditions, which might adversely affect his exercising the powers and duties of a Peace Officer.
